Welcome to the pages of the International Association for Craniofacial Identification (IACI).
As the name suggests, the IACI is an international group of professionals holding common interest in craniofacial identification, broadly defined as any undertaking to use skulls and/or faces for human identification.
The Association was first established in 1992, following four precursor meetings. The first initial meeting was conducted in Vancouver in 1987 by a special interest group in craniofacial identification lead by Richard Helmer. The second meeting was held as the "International Craniofacial Identification Group" in Kiel (1988) and then a subsequent third meeting was held in Adelaide (1991). At the 4th meeting, in Shenyang, the International Association for Craniofacial Identification was formed.
Association members come from a broad range of backgrounds (e.g., physical anthropology, anatomy, forensic odontology, forensic art, facial image analysis, psychology, computer science, biometrics and law enforcement) with representation from all continents of the world.
The association holds a biennial meeting in order to promote standardization, evaluate techniques, and to facilitate scientific discussion, research dissemination and continued professional development. Since 1987, there have been 19 meetings hosted around the globe - the next congress is scheduled to be held 2024 at Granada Spain.
