Beginnings of the Association:
The Association was developed as a result of a group of people with special interests in craniofacial identification meeting in 1987. The event was the Annual Conference of the International Association of Forensic Sciences held in Vancouver, Canada, and as a result a special workshop, arranged by Richard Helmer, was held the following year, 1988, in Kiel, Germany. The subject was "Advances in Skull Identification via Video Superimposition". There were many invited speakers from all over the world, setting the tone for a very international meeting. On this occasion the International Craniofacial Identification Group (CIG) was established. At a third meeting of the CIG in 1992 in Shenyang, China, those present decided the time had come to reform the group and since then the group has been known as the "International Association for Craniofacial Identification". |
